Is the 5718 tube good for anything or should I throw it in the trash?

Fairly nice plate curves. Could be used as a preamp tube, or even a little PP headphone amp.

I have a few hundred of them, so sooner or later I will find something to do with them. They can be stuffed into an 8 pin round (to-5 style) op-amp IC socket so that you can change tubes.

I was thinking that submini's would make nice tubes for phono preamps and output stages of CD players.

Subminiature tubes are discussed in this book. Click the links in Contents to get to the pages on miniaturization and subminiature tubes.
