Hi everybody,
Does anyone know a schematic using only one ECL 82 per channel, for a SE headphone amp ? If I understand correctly the construction of a ECL 82, I could use only a pair of these tubes for a little amp... I can't find any schematic...suitable for a newbie... Any suggestion or comment are welcome. thanks a lot |

There aren't many circuits out there for your required application - because its hard to get the ECL82 to sound good. I built a parafeed ECL82 SE headphone amp, but found it sounded harsh and so stripped it down. I built a PP ECL82 headphone amp and it sounds much better.
On the PP amp I used a step down input transformer and I think this is the secret. My guess is that it is very easy to overload the input triode and this was the source of the harshness on my first build. Of course I could be wrong. Can't point you to any good circuits unfortunately. Shoog |

Hi Shoog,
thanks a lot for your answer. These comments are very important cues for a newbie like me. I saw, in one other thread, that you did offer to post the schematic of your headphone amp with ECL82. If you are willing to offer it again, it's not impossible that a guy like me should say "yes, thanks, that's a good idea"... That should be interesting for me because I'm looking for a little headphone amp to build, too. And if you say that the PP sounds better than the SE, I will take your advice in consideration. Thanks |

I posted it up on that other thread.
The only main issue with it is that it has a requirement for quite specific input transformers which I had lying around. The step down ration isn't critical though. Shoog |
