It is my understanding that VTL amps tie together all of the output transformer secondary taps, for a nominal impedance of 5 ohms.

Does this offer any benefits over traditional discrete secondary connections (4/8/16 ohms)? What are the drawbacks?

I am planning to build a SE EL34 amp, switchable between triode and UL...probably something based on Mikael's simple KT88 design posted here.
