Hello, I have an Audionote Oto amp to which I would like to add a Border Patrol type PSU.
Can anyone help with a schematic, or share any experiences of thier own builds. I won't kid myself and consider myslef in the same league as most of the builders here, but I feel I could handle a PSU project, as always lack of funds are a driving force hence the DIY project. As always any opinion would be greatly apprceciated. Kind regards, Anil K Solanki Lugo Italy. |

Border Patrol use an LC choke input power supply (ie a choke is the first element used after the rectifiers). There is plenty of information on this topology available on the web. Well worth the effort IMHO.
Download Duncanamps PSUD2 and do some simulations before you build. The exercise will be very instructive.

thanks for the link! I have played around with PSUD2 some, but now I'm ready to build! Any recommendations on how to build a dummy load that will let me test things out before hooking it up to my amplifier? I'd like to simulate two or three different load currents. Also, is there a easy way to measure (and graph) the voltage and current over time to make sure that my amplifier doesn't get a suddent surge in either? The reason I ask is my simulations in PSUD2 show a huge spike in voltage at turn on, and I'm not sure if my circuit is considered "soft-start" or not.
Thanks! |

Hi, the huge spike exists really, you can make it smaller adding some series resistance after the transformer primary, which after a few sec. can be shorted with a 555-relay combi.
Get a choke wound for choke input (big! high AC voltage across it, not only DC as in cap input). Don't let anyone sell you a swinging choke, current consumption is constant, this is a SE, not a class B amp. Greetings Konstantinos |
