Question Aikido Power Supply

Hi all,

I have picked up two second hand potted 240V / 120V transformers. Will it be ok to parallel primary's and series the secondary's to give me 240v AC B+ Supply Voltage?
Any major issues with using the two on top of my pre-amp chassis? I have not had a lot of luck finding a suitable single tranny in Oz (reasonably priced that is).

Cheers
Dave

Just use a full-wave voltage doubler on a single tranny to get your 240V out.

No sense reinventing the wheel.

You can also use a simple 1:1 isolating transformer. Usually these are not too hard to come by and quite cheap.

Beau,

He already has the transformers. I interpreted his question as asking if he could get the voltage he needs out of the transformer(s) he has.

Transformers are expensive.

Hi Poindexter,

Thanks for the reply. I was not aware I could get double the voltage in this way. I will have a look at it in PSUD. Would your circuit as shown provide an adequate Filter for the Akido ?

Another option I thought of was to wire it up in reverse, so I get 480VAC and filter down with LC's until I get desired 300VDC? I have plenty of Caps but would have to source the chokes.

Cheers

Hi again

After reading another thread, I could piggy back the two TX's - 240 - 120 - 120 - 240.
Are there any advantages to this? Would this filter some noise from mains?

Cheers

dmk,

No that's just the rectification and first stage of the filter. A good two-stage might be something like this.

You could get more elaborate (I use a three-stage with an additional RC section), but I recall the Aikido circuit as having a hum cancellation subcircuit on the output.

Thanks for the replies Poinz.

If there is nothing to be gained by using the two Tx's and a full Bridge rectifier, I will use one Tx and a voltage doubler.

Thanks for the schematic, I will put it into PSUD and have a look.

Cheers

You won't be able to plug the voltage doubler into PSUD, as it has no provision for anything but the standard connections. But you can probably come close by using entering twice the measured voltage and resistance of the secondary, and half of the combined capacitance of your series C. Everything after the first C is done the normal way.

PSUD has the full-wave voltage doubler in its library of rectifier circuits; I use it all the time.

Aloha,
