These sockets (http://i9.ebayimg.com/04/i/08/73/5c/01_1.JPG) are sold cheaply in ebay.
Has anyone used something similar before? How is the quality? Does it break often? also in this photo: http://i20.ebayimg.com/04/i/08/7a/38/ba_1.JPG, what is the purpose of the metal tube in the middle? Thanks for the reply.

The first kind you show (wafer) is generally pretty good, electrically at least... but they're ugly. Good for breadboarding and such.
The metal tube is just to use as a tie point.. generally ground |

If you are after Int Octal (IO).... hunt for the old phenol McMurdo types. Phenol may have been banned but the original brass contacts are far more rigid than the ceramic white chinese ones which are way too sloppy for large tubes.
