Hi !
I have a pair of Quad II with unusual mains transformers. The voltage selector board indicates : 200-215, 216-232, 233-250 instead of more commonly found voltage ranges : 190-209, 210-229, 230-250 Also, instead of having 5 tags (the 3 corresponding with selection above + COM + SHIELD), it features 8 tags in 2 rows of 4 tags each ! See attached picture. I believe the arrangement has been modified and some wires are missing while some straps have been added. It does work but it's not clean ... and could perhaps yields higher voltage than the standard one if wrongly connected. Did somebody cope with this kind of unusual tranny before ? If so, which is the correct wiring of the windings ? Any help appreciated, Hervé |

Your QUAD amps are perfectly original.....
They did make models with no US 120 voltage tap.....actually a different transformer primary winding altogether..... i belive the early models for Europe were like this.... I have a pair of QUADS I bought from Germany many years ago and I use them in the USA, they do not have 120V option, just like your has...... I use a HUGE step-up transformer....it is a 1500W unit that weighs in at 35 pounds..... It works out great since I also plug my PR99 R-2-R into the step-up transformer...so everthing is operating at 220V and isolated from rest of system... The good news is that this version transformer has better Circular Mills/ Ampere on primary winding and does not suffer as badly with the melting of the infamous black potting tar.... If you need assistance for the voltage taps...let me know..I will check my unit and send you connection info if need be... Best Regards Chris |

Many thanks Chris, that's good news !
My account is currently under moderation hence I cannot send you PM, you may, if you wish, send an E-mail to hd38@free.fr so I get your E-mail address and we can follow on the discussion out of band. I would gladly accept your proposal to send me connection info. Iwill send you better shots of the Xformer when I have your E-mail. To other members : I apologize for BW usage, hope I will soon be able to send PM's :-) |
