congrats.

i am awaiting some paper in oil and some ft73 teflons to try as coupling caps.
maybe i`ll use some pio and ptfe in parallel and see what happens.
right now i have 1uf pp 600v epcos coupling caps.

every time i hear my moskido it amazes me, just like when i turn on my crt projector, just cannot get enough of its marvel.

beau, question about the russian 1578 and 1579 tubes.
is melz the only brand with those 1578 and 1579 named tubes?

john : the ones you link to on ebay are the real thing. You are lucky to find them - snap them up at that price!

The 1578 / 6SN7 ones are much harder to find and many people are selling fakes. The two things to look for on these are (1) holes in the anode (2) the metal strengtheners that hold the innards still. See the 1579 example above to see what I mean. Here's some examples:

FAKE

These ones are interesting. They have the holes but not the proper metal supports. I think they are lesser tubes.

So, I can't see any real genuine 1578's right now on ebay. But they are not worth the money imho.

This is a real one - note also it has 1578 stamped on it..

Guys,
How do these Russian tubes compare with NOS American made 6SN7's? I have 13 NOS tested matched 6SN7's. GE, Sylvania and RCA.

And thanks for the recommendation on the Mundorf's. I bought the Silver in oil caps. There is a huge improvement over the Solens! Now I just have to come up wth the money to put them in my power amps.

Well, before I built moskido I played with a lot of aikido preamps. I quickly discovered that octal tubes sounded better than 9-pins.

Then I started buying all sorts of NOS tubes. Spent a small fortune. Got a wide range, including some of the supposedly best (although not the 'legendary' types that sell for $400 each). Tung-Sol, RCA Red base, lots of sylvania, and so on.

Short story is that the Russian 1578/1579 ones trounce them all. They are cleaner, more musical. Just better. In those days (which is about 5 years ago) you could buy pairs of 1578 for $99. The guy selling then would only sell 2 per week, so you had to win auction after auction to collect enough. I wish I had bought more. I only got about 4 pairs.

On the other hand, the 1579s were common and cheap. I bought 20 for about $60. Again I wish I'd bought more. I've swapped several of these and don't have any left for sale, sorry.

Legend has it that these tubes were used in special projects like nuclear missile control (in the 50s, 60s) and they spared no expense getting them perfect.

As far as the majority of NOS tubes go, most are nothing special and the new production Tung-Sols are just as good, if not better.

Thanks Beau, the only advatage to these tubes is that they were FREE! I intend to use them in an Acrosound amp, the Hafler and Keroes.
