Default X10 Pre

Hey all,

I have just read thru the following post of the Musical Fidelity X10D Pre/Tube Buffer

MF XPre troubleshooting

It looks interesting that its on a +/- 30VDC supply (and 6.2VAC Heaters)

Anyway, I was thinking of building one and have a newbee question:

For the +/-30VDC, I have a 21 - 0 - 21 Toroid that I was thinking of using with a Full Bridge Rectifier/10,000uf smoothing caps to get +/-30V rails.

For the Heater Voltages, I was planning on winding a new coil onto the 21-0-21 toroid to get the required 6.2VAC for the heaters (AC on heaters)

Any thoughts/comments on whether this is a good idea? The rest of the components look like they should be to difficult to get...my first tube pre, hence the lame-o question...

Thanks

Hi John,

I have owned one of these and IMO they are very ordinary. There are better projects out there

Thanks for the heads up...

But the concept of using a 21-0-21 80VA toroid is possible?

Do you know of another lower voltage (30 ish) simple tube preamp designs out there?

Again, I want to build it, not buy it.

There is a low voltage version of the Aikido which uses ECC86's (a tube designed for low voltages - as opposed to the ECC88 which isn't).
I had a X10D and I liked it when I had medioca gear. The thing that I found was that it seemed to be optimised for the supplied tubes. I tried other tubes and didn't like the result.

I agree - you can do a lot better.
