Yes, that did occur to me and I refered to that in my post . However the V2 grid is at ground potential and so there is no way that the cathode could also be at zero volts . So it still looks like it ( - V ) wasn't required ...........isn't it ?
The direct coupled stage is simpler and does the job very well. Is there any sonic improvement in the scheme that is shown with 3 supplies ?
