The purpose of such hi value resistor is to provide discharge path for the capacitor after detachment of the interconnection cable. Otherwise if the cap remains charged, shorting the hot wire and ground will present the remained voltage to the input of the amp thus causing a "thump", whose magnitude can vary from negligible to destructive, depending on the remained voltage.
