Yes it would work, but I would prefer something that actually fit on the board. The specified Panasonic capacitors probably outperform that can capacitor anyway.

Any extra wires hanging around may promote oscillation and higher likelihood of being connected incorrectly. That way there are less things to go wrong on first power up.
