TSE c4 question

I built my TSE using a choke in place of r4. I found I only needed about 1uf for c4. Any reason not to use a film cap instead of an electrolytic in this location? Thanks, Evan

No - in fact, given the choice, I'd choose the film cap.

I wouldn't put a film cap there for two reasons:

1) The low ESR of the film cap is in series with the relatively large resistance of the choke. The amp won't see the benefit.

2) The low ESR is in series with the rectifier, which will increase the peak ripple current that the rectifier needs to pass. The effect is not much, especially with the lower C value you are using, but it's something to think about.

If you have a nice film cap, put it in parallel with C5 instead.

well well 2 different opinions. Russ, I have a motor run cap paralleling c5. I used a couple of film caps in parallel for c4 and just wanted to neaten things up a little. Will probably use an electrolytic bypassed with a small film cap to fine tune the voltage.

Ah, OK. Yeah, if it's what you have handy then it doesn't really matter. Just wanted to be clear that a film cap in that position is not really an advantage, per se.
