I have used basically same circuit and it works great. Below is my version. It has also a voltage amplifying stage, which is in most cases not needed. Also the cathode follower - as in your example - is not necessary if the used signal source is having low impedance device like CD-player etc.

Very good feature of this circuit is - compared with passive one's - is that one can use linear potentiometers. Also the "flat" response is exactly at middle position of the pots.
