Is there an advantage to use a preamp like the Simple 5687 (diyparadise - Simple 5687-based preamp) with the Simple SE?

The SSE has plenty of gain in most configs, so a preamp isn't really needed for that unless your source is unusually low. The other reason a preamp is helpful is drive, especially is you want a separate volume control.

I use a Mapletree 2A SE that uses 6sn7's. I like it better than the Hong Kong ebay special SMD attenuator ($25). I would like to hear what other people use. glas-ware has a nice kit attenuator I will try to put together soon.

I have an old 2-chassis Anthem Pre-1 that is ok, so I built the Simple SE with a 12bh7a driver tube (much less gain) and no volume control... this works well. Eventually I will build a preamp and sell the Anthem, but I am sold on the drive and musicality of an active preamp, I tried the SimpleSE with and without (using foobar's volume control which I know is a handicap), and I do prefer the sound with a preamp.
However, with the stock 12at7 I think you will have too much gain in most cases. |
