Using Simple SE with a preamp

Is there anything that should be changed in the stock circuit when running it with a preamp? Using either solid state or tube.

Nope. Just watch if your preamp has alot of gain that you are not clipping the amp when trying to play it louder.
If it is permanent then you could eliminate the volume pot, not required though.

I like to use my preamp with the SSE using CFB. I get the gainback.

Sounds good! I have no volume pot and always use it with a preamp. I have a tube pre that is uses a 6dj8 and a 6ns7 but it has to much gain about 1 click on the alps 50k pot and she is to loud. Need to do some looking into on that. Thanks

The SSE has a plenty of gain, so a pre is not needed to put the amp into clipping from typical "line level" sources. How much gain does your preamp have?

Can the current source at the input tube anode be replaced by a resistor if the gain is to high?

Will it affect performance (other than PSRR) compared to CCS?

That would reduce the gain. How much depends on what operating point you choose.

I have a high-gain tube preamp that I like, so I built the Simple SE without a volume pot and used a JJ ecc99 / 12bh7 driver tube. It has a lot less gain than the at7. I posted about it in a thread about driver tubes in this forum.

Hi all,
I am a little confused about the lowering the gain on my simple se.
I am using a 26 DHT pre amp, and finding the gain too high on the SSE.
What input valves can i drop in place to lower the gain, and any components i need to change on the PCB?
Is the 12bh7 such a tube?

12BH7 is a suitable substitute, but it requires a different set point on the CSS to operate it in its most linear region.

I would like to try that i SimpleSE, could you give a qualified starting point for 12BH7: CCS current and Rk value?

I would like to know as well, could we parallel resisters to R13, R14 & R19 to adjust the set point?
