A Kansas City man who once spent about five years in prison in an abandoned-body case is back in trouble after a weekend incident.
It is the second time this spring that Matthew K. Davis has been arrested after allegedly fleeing from police.
In the most recent incident, Kansas City police attempted to pull over a pickup truck early Saturday in Westport after the driver struck a curb. The suspect crashed through a wrought-iron gate, knocked over a metal post and struck a parked car at 58th and Main streets before stopping near Meyer Boulevard and Wornall Road.
When the driver, later identified as Davis, resisted arrest, officers used a stun gun to subdue him, according to police reports.
Davis, 44, was charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, and resisting arrest by fleeing. His bond was set at $5,000.
He was already out on bond in two Johnson County cases, including an incident in April in which he allegedly fled from an Olathe restaurant with a bucket of beer after not paying for a meal. An Olathe police officer was almost struck by his fleeing vehicle, according to allegations in that case.
Johnson County prosecutors charged Davis with aggravated assault on a police officer and fleeing an eluding. He posted a $10,000 bond this month, according to court records.
In another Johnson County case last year, Davis was charged with driving under the influence and possession of heroin, court records show.
Attorney Dionne Scherff, who represents Davis in the Johnson County cases, said his latest arrest was unfortunate but did not “change the fact that he has valid defenses” in those cases.
Jackson County authorities prosecuted Davis for abandonment of a corpse after he left the body of a 22-year-old woman in an abandoned car in 2004. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven years in prison, but he was released in February 2009 after the conviction was overturned on appeal.
Last December a judge again found him guilty, but he did not have to serve additional prison time.

Hello, does the name Clayton R. Dunlap ring a bell with anyone? The guy who was out on bond and killed an innocent 12-year-old while driving drunk again? He had dozens of DUI and fleeing from police incidents while an irresponsible judge kept letting him go over and over.
Well, guess what? This Davis guy is also going to kill or cripple someone, probably sooner than later. I don't care how crowded the jails are, the prosecutor and judge must lock him up and keep him there. He has a trust fund and will bond out every time.
I'm not very smart, but I know this to be true. How can an educated judge be so ignorant? When Davis runs over someone in his next drugged and drunken stupor, the judge in this case should be tried as an accessory to the murder and share a cell with him.

Missouri Men Face Charges in Horrific Sex Torture, Trafficking Case - WDAF
KANSAS CITY, MO — Five Missouri men, including the Nevada, Missouri postmaster and a national representative for Disabled American Veterans, were indicted Thursday for sexually abusing and torturing a young mentally deficient woman for several years.
"The allegations contained in this indictment are among the most horrific ever prosecuted in this district," U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri Beth Phillips said. "The sexual torture suffered over a period of years by the victim is highly disturbing."
Edward Bagley, Sr., 43, and Michael Stokes, 62, both of Lebanon, Mo., Dennis Henry, 50, of Wheatland, Mo., James Noel, 44, of Springfield, Mo., and Bradley Cook, 31, of St. Louis were charged in an 11-count indictment for their role in the commercial sex trafficking conspiracy. Henry is the Nevada postmaster and Stokes is a national representative for Disabled American Veterans.
The indictment alleges that in December 2002, Bagley enticed "FV," then a 16-year-old mentally deficient runaway, with a promise to help her become a model and dancer. Bagley allegedly gave her drugs and began sexually abusing her at that time.
In 2004, Bagley allegedly began sexually torturing the girl and had her sign a "sex slave contract," which he convinced FV legally bound her to him as a sex slave for the rest of her life. The indictment says that Bagley tattooed her to mark her as his property including a bar code on her neck, a tribal tattoo on her back with the letter "S" to mark her as a slave, and the Chinese symbol for slave on her ankle.
The federal investigation began after FV suffered cardiac arrest after Bagley allegedly suffocated and electrocuted FV during a torture session on February 27, 2009. FV, who was 23 years old at that time, received emergency medical treatment and was hospitalized.
For four years, the indictment alleges that Bagley tortured FV on live webcasts on the Internet, which the indictment says that Noel, Stokes and Henry paid Bagley to watch. The indictment also says that Henry and Stokes paid Bagley to take FV to California with Henry for a photo shoot, where FV performed sexual acts. Bagley and Henry are charged together in one count of transportation for sexual activity.
The indictment says that Henry, Stokes and Cook also sexually abused and tortured FV and that Stokes paid Bagley $300 for a torture session, and also gave him money to build a home-made device to sexually torture FV.
Bagley is also charged with forced labor trafficking and document servitude after the indictment alleges that Bagley forced FV to work as a stripper from June 2007 to February 2009 and kept her earnings.
Bagley is also charged with using the Internet for enticement, enticement to travel for sexual activity, conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance to a person under the age of 21 and being a drug user in possession of firearms and ammunition.
Cook is also charged with one count of being a drug user in possession of firearms and ammunition.
Each of the five defendants is also charged with one count of commercial sex trafficking and one count of using the Internet to facilitate the unlawful activity.
The US Attorney says that a conviction for commercial sex trafficking carries a penalty of a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison without parole. A conviction for either commercial sex trafficking or forced labor trafficking that involves aggravated sexual abuse carries a maximum penalty of life in federal prison without parole.

Prosecutors on Friday announced robbery and armed criminal action charges against Michael L. Wilson, Jr., 17, and Darion O. Page, 18, both of Kansas City. The third suspect was a juvenile.
According to court documents, Wilson denied participating in the robberies. All he did was drive, he told police. Page admitted being present, the documents said, but he blamed the holdups on the juvenile. The 16-year-old declined to make a statement.
A man who identified himself as a preacher got stuck in the snow about 10 p.m. Wednesday near 85th and Prospect Avenue, the court document said. A man stopped to help.
As they dug with shovels, a two-tone Chevrolet Suburban pulled up, and a passenger asked whether they needed help.
Two men got out the Suburban. One pulled a semi-automatic handgun and demanded money.
A few hours later, the same scenario with a Suburban played out with a stuck motorist near 103rd Street and Hillcrest Road.
As police were on their way to that robbery, other officers spotted a two-tone Suburban stuck in snow at 93rd and Hillcrest.
The two men and the juvenile inside needed help all right. But forget the shovels. They needed lawyers.
