The Glass Castle was also quite good.

I agree it was quite good, but not best. Certainly the best of the money-grab reboots of late... probably half of my enjoyment was relief! I try to go into these things without too much comparison to the original; or else Iím bound for disappointment.

The most recent Alien restored a bit of faith as well.

Best for me has to be divided into classic and modern....

Iíll throw some trailers in for some of the sleepers.

Best classics?

(La Jetee and Stalker are tied in my top spot for science fiction)

La Jetee

Stalker

Visitor to a Museum

Solaris:

Videodrome:

First Mad Max (imho beats the sequels)

And of course the bigger box office efforts:
Terminator I
Alien
Blade Runner
2001
Brazil

Modern Sci-Fi / last 10-20 years

These three at the top are far and away the best indie Sci Fi efforts to date. Amazing the special effects you can make up for with raw talent.

Timecrimes:

Midnight Special:

A Scanner Darkly
Gattaca

And the past few years have been especially fruitful. While not flawless, excellent in their own way and thoroughly immersive from a visual standpoint.

The Arrival
Gravity
Interstellar
Mad Max Fury Road
Annihilation

Also interested to see The Congress, apparently loosely based on The Futurological Congress by Stanislav Lem which is one of my favorite books. However Iíve been partially avoiding it in fear of it disappointing me.

For post apocalypse sci-fi there are several not always mentioned, "Five", "On the Beach", and "The World, the Flesh and the Devil". I love the way the Mad Max franchise turned into an amalgam of S&M industrial. punk, and wrestling culture as opposed to the gross self indulgence of "Waterworld" or the "Postman".

How do you deem Waterworld and Postman to be gross self indulgence? Maybe you're just not a fan of Kevin Costner. On another note I would say most sci-fi / action movies of recent years would all be better movies if they cut the special effects action by about 50% and added in an equal amount to deepen the characters portrayed so we actually have a reason to care about them.

My opinion plain and simple, take it or leave it.

Neither a Costner hater or apologist, but for those keeping a scorecard, I couldnít agree more with Scott on this.
At least a few gazillion dollars and CG talent was directed at something less mind-numbing than say Green Lantern. At least Ryan bounced back one of my absolute faves in the past 10 yrs - Deadpool - and not just because of the scenes with Morena.

Agreed pleasantly surprised by the mad max trajectory. It didnít take itself too seriously, and excelled at it.

I read on the beach and watched the film, as well as the 2000ish made-for-tv reboot. The other two were from before my time but have heard of them both and will check them out.

Speaking of made-for-tv efforts, while admittedly not the best display of acting and of course the bookís quality is insurmountable I enjoyed the three part Childhoods End.

Some others I donít believe I included but are worthwhile:

Time of the Wolf (Haneke / Funny Games) was also good.

And Delicatessen:

And canít forget about a boy and his dog. Perhaps don Johnsons finest moment (but also perhaps not saying much?)

YouTube

Never let me go:

World on a wire:

(The matrix basically spliced this with kung-fu and lots of guns)

Alphaville

Also best Horror flick since Witch and It Follows was certainly Hereditary. Catch it in theaters if itís still playing near you.

Scott- this one I think youíll dig quite a bit. Personally I thought it was an instant classic.

And sorry all I have to side with Scott here, Postman and Waterworld - alongside most Costner efforts in general - are trash imho.

Last thing he did that was worth 2 hours of my mildly focused life force was A Perfect World.

Iíd sooner watch Battlefield Earth.

It's ok we don't all have to like the same things but i very much enjoyed several Costner movies, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Swing Vote, JFK, Dances With Wolves, and others.

If you like Costner, you should add Thirteen Days and The Upside of Anger to your list.
