I never recorded for target audience with iPods or car speakers only.
What I mean, if somebody have experience as an audio engineer it makes harder to enjoy records made with mistakes. And if somebody has experience as designer of audio equipment it is harder to enjoy reproduction through mediocre system because instead of listening to the music you listen to errors.

In 1969 I was 12. I finally found NPN transistor and made quasi-complementary amp for bass guitar, in a toolbox. Believe or not, only PNP germanium transistors were available then in small Siberian town. However, I had vacuum tubes then, but I "knew" that they were obsoleted forever.
This was me in '69. Not really concerned with music or stereo, just being an Echo Park hippie kid. But Dad was a jazz drummer, had 2ch recording at home, jazz bands at home rehearsing all of the time. Lots of parties at home with the wild weed passed around. Sometimes the stuff would make it my way for a quick toke.

Cannabis in Siberia grew wild, but nobody smoked it because people believed that only weak persons use narcotics. Strong persons drink vodka. I always wanted to be a strong person.
The stuff available back then was pretty weak. That is my only defense

Wavebourn, I have to give you credit: You were only about 5 years behind us, at the time. Given the limited resources and your age, at the time, you were a real 'fireball'. When I was your age, I was riding my bicycle and looking through a telescope in my back yard. I didn't play guitar until I was 15, and in a band at 16.

I don't mean that vodka makes people strong. I mean it was belief then in Siberia that strong men drink vodka, while weak men use narcotics.
What does this have to do with electronics? Well, some people believe that passive components distort sound more than active components. Similar belief.

If there were Ipods at the time, i would certainly had used them to verify my mix balance good enough in those, because it is an important part of the audience
Don't you understand the monitor's problem impact for a free lance engineer obliged to work in various studios with various equipments ? All of us have very bad remembrance of the first time we where obliged to mix with UREI (too much presence -> mixes too dull) or Tannoy (Big sound -> thin mix).

Thank you John. My dad was sent there in 1947, convicted as "Enemy of People" (I suppose government was afraid of own officers because after they took Berlin they could take Moscow). First, he was involved in logging, made ties, built a railway line, and then was admitted to the "propaganda team", which consisted of the great actors, singers, and musicians. Propaganda team went to concerts in the zones and performed for other prisoners, guards and their beefy families. After liberation in 1953-1954 (after Salin's death) many of the participants of that "propaganda team" remained in the city working in theaters, schools, playing dances. From early childhood I remember the atmosphere of the holiday. Jazz Orchestra in a city park where my dad played accordion. It gave me the boost to accelerate, I was always dissatisfied with what I saw in everyday life getting duller and duller, always wanted something better ... I was not afraid of changes, because I saw better life... It was better for me, but not for those great talented people assembled in Siberia against their wills.

My grandfather, an apparent Communist follower, went back to the USSR in about 1937. He was REALLY sorry that he did so, but he had kept his Russian citizenship, even when he had been in the USA for at least 20 years. He could not leave, and he 'disappeared' soon after. I do have some letters to my grandmother, that came from Russia, sent after he went back. We know what happened, don't we?
