Does anyone know of a simple way or formula for selecting the proper size heat-sinks ?

Hi,

Its not simple at all when your talking big heatsinks. The rest of the time
looking at similar applications you usually need very similar heatsinks.

Look in the application notes in the data sheet for the LM3886 chip amp. Given is a relatively simple relation between maximum junction temperature and ambient temperature, and case and heatsink degrees C (or K) per Watt ratings. This is about as simple as it can be made, although the same heatsink will have a different C/W rating at each level of dissipated power.
