FS: Proto Single ended 6GE5 Compactron Amplifier - SOLD
Ok, here's an opportunity for you solder slingers, a prototyping single ended 6GE5 compaction amplifier. The signal section is built after Thomas Mayer's simple 6GE5 amp, the schematic of which is shown here: VinylSavor: 6GE5
Basically, it is a two stage RC coupled comprised of a 6AG9 and a 6GE5.
The power supply differs a bit from what Mayer shows and uses a power transformer from a current production guitar amplifier; thus, it is not NOS. Can't say who; but, what I can say is that to buy this transformer, it costs a little over $100. It has an electrostatic shield. With fancy modern diodes and an LC filter of a Hammond 158Q ($25) and 200uF, the B+ is 306 VDC with 110mA of current supplied. In testing, with 1uF in front of the LC filter the B+ rises to 326 VDC. Obviously, with 2uF, you approach 350 VDC. So, you have some ability to adjust the B+.
The chassis is all aluminum construction using premade shapes that can be found at most local hardwares - 1" channel, 2" plate. In fact, the amp is built so that the various top plates can be changed out to realize different circuit and tubes. You're only limited by what you can think of, to some extent.
The amp sounds decent within it's limitations of power.
Here's a shot of the amp fired up:
Here's a shot of the under side without the bottom section having feet:
Here's a shot with the bottom section attached:
Here's front quarter shots and one from the back. The front has a predrilled mounting hole for a volume control should you choose to add one.
Also, included are a extra 6GE5 (3 total) and 10 more 6AG9 tubes (12 total). In addition, the are 10 6BE3 diode dampers and 8 new ceramic compaction sockets. According to my records, I have right at $100 in the tubes and sockets.
Coupling caps are Obagallato PIO gold foil.
The amp weighs about 10 pounds. Measures 6" wide by 16" deep by 7" tall at the power transformer. Shipping dimensions would be bigger with packing and all the tubes.
Really need to get this moved out of here and thought some DIYer here might appreciate it - $200 and shipping from 45140.
