Description:
A working but incomplete Empire 698 turntable -- tonearm NOT INCLUDED $375 OBO
This is an Empire 698 audiophile project ready for completion with a tonearm and a motor cover
The motor drive system is all tested and working (belt shows age), and all metal internals have been treated with vibration reducing Dynamat wrap material.
The flywheel platter face has been precision machined to present a fully flat surface (no step) which now allows for use of more advanced and more standard design platter mats.
A blue LED now illuminates the clear plastic tonearm retainer post.
It has real glass, no scratch dust cover in perfect condition with pristine EMPIRE logo.

In sum, the Empire 698 is a beautifully constructed and finished product, one of the few remaining truly manual record players. It should be able to extract the fullest measure of performance from any cartridge and record. It is certain, too, that no one will wish to hide it from view since it is one audio product that looks as good as it sounds.
moves effortlessly on 32 jeweled, sapphire bearings with bearing friction a mere 0.001g.
A self-cooling hysteresis synchronous motor drives the platter with enough torque to reach full speed in one third of a revolution.
To prevent any variations of speed each belt is ground within one ten thousandth of an inch thickness.
The two piece, 7 LB,and 3" thick, die cast aluminum platter is dynamically balanced, and once in motion it acts as a massive flywheel to assure the specified wow and flutter value.
The suspension system consists of piston damped, 16 gauge steel coil springs.
The main bearing features a stainless steel shaft with a precision ground tip sitting in self lubricating bearings, reducing rumble to one of the lowest figures ever measured in a professional turntable.

Condition:
The tone arm assembly is NOT included
Motor cover is missing.
Small plastic piece at grip tip of tonearm retainer post has cracked off -- replacement needed.
Drive system and suspension are both in working condition and functioning normally
Dust cover wood frame is sturdy and pivot hinges are working properly.
Cosmetically - the wood finish is in great condition with no visible significant scratches or damage at all. The gold anodizing in near perfect on frame top and only some rub lines at one spot on of the platter ring, and which can only be seen at a very specific & narrow reflection angle.
