Re battery powered mike, how about the Radio Shack SLM; it has an output jack, and there's a guy who will run a calibration curve for you if you think you need to be real accurate.

You can try to get a decent capsule from B&K on eBay, but they are getting pricey now. There are calibrators, too.

There are good baked research mics out there, too. Earthworks are very good.

digikey sells the famous Panasonic capsules that are fine for this work. They are fine for most audio work, actually!

Warren, great links. Thanks a lot. Now I have enough info to design my own gear now. I have couple of unknown electret mic in my junk box. I just don't know their freq response. According to all I read in the links you supplied, most of them should give pretty flat response from 20-20KHz.

I see what you are trying to do. I was actually trying to find out how much Noah wanted to charge for the Radio Shack meter. I worded the question poorly, I guess...

The Panasonic capsules are pretty good, if you know someone in your area with a calibrated mic, you can compare and note the differences. If you dig, I am sure Pana has this info out there.
