Hi Atomicmidi, I've moved this to Swap Meet as I think that is probably the right place.

Do you have one that no longer works? Have you checked out what is wrong with it (in which case the thread could end up belonging somewhere else...)

They suffer from coil rubbing over time which could be about the magnet moving over time (and so closing up the gap the coil moves in - can't remember the term for that gap).

I've fixed a Spendor BC3 bass driver before with advice found around the web to re-centre the magnet. It involved heating the magnet up on a hob (electric!) which softened the glue holding on the magnet and then tapping the magnet back and forth with a block and hammer until the coil no longer rubbed..The mid-drivers could suffer the same problem, especially if made in the same way at the same time with the same materials.

Of course if it's the coil blown then maybe it can be fixed too by a specialist - it's only a coil of copper glued onto a cardboard tube afterall.

Last Alnico drivers I saw on Ebay went for almost the price of a whole pair of BC1s, certainly for a price you can buy BC1s away from Ebay anyway.

This is a DIY site so I'd guess you'd rather fix them yourself?

Default spendor

My problem is slightly different.. some absolute joker had replaced one of the woofers at some stage and I bought them that way. The replacement driver has the psychoacoustic characteristics of a turd. It has to be replaced but I cannot find anyone who would sell me one.. otherwise they are in a fair shape. If anyone has a broken woofer I would even buy that and get it reconditioned...

Thanks for advice though!

aaah.. "psychoacoustic characteristics of a turd" - I'm trying not to imagine too much but probably quite dull.

I'd say if you can get one that broken for cheap then it's worth mucking about with one.

There's a German Ebay seller, Audio Classics or something like that, who often has drivers like that for sale but often fairly expensive.

If anything comes up on the 'bay I'll PM you. If you've a little cash to spare, you might even find a pair for cheap with one blown Alnico (I mean, who would possibly have a spare to replace it with??) and then be able to buy a pair of the later drivers and so sell them on again at a proper price as a working pair. All in, you'd probably get your second Alnico effectively for free plus the effort..
