ok so could i use a off the shelf toroidal of say 250 -300va with 45volt windings,would that extra 1 volt hurt it in any way.

?most likely you'll be fine..

The 45V rating will be for fully loaded, to get the off load volts you'll need to know the regulation and add it. I could be some 3 to 5 % higher.
