I have a pair of used B&C 12PE32 12" midranges. I want $200 (+shipping) for the pair. Contact me at rybaudio@hotmail.com if you are interested.
These are in excellent condition and have been only used in a low (<100w) power home system for about a year, though I have had them for about 3 years. They are super efficient as midranges- toss them in .3-.5 sealed and you'll have ~102 dB 2.8V/1m from 200 Hz to 2 kHz. In IB or a larger box it's more like 101 dB 2.8V/1m. They have a big ceramic magnet and 2.5" voice coil to dissipate heat, and the motor has about 5mm of linear travel each way (I've had them on a Klippel analyzer). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Next I have some half-space anechoic measurements of one of them. The curves are SPL at 1m at 10 degree increments off-axis starting with on-axis and ending at 80 degrees off-axis. The drive is 2.8V. The speaker is mounted in an infinite baffle that forms one wall of an anechoic chamber. Note the vertical scale is 40 dB and the horizontal scale 100-10k Hz. You can see the speaker is super sensitive and well-behaved (minus a little breakup at ~550 Hz) up to about 1.8k. The behavior below 500 Hz can be manipulated some by enclosure choice. ![]() Finally, someone previously asked me "how would you describe their music performance?" My response was: When used in a well-designed and tuned system, they don't have any tonal problems (neutral), and they sound effortless at any listening volume. I like to listen pretty loud, and I've never needed over a 100w amp on them. Basically they'll rip your head off without any noticeable tonal change while simultaneously laughing at the handful of watts you're barely tickling them with. But you have to keep in mind that these are only going to be used in fairly complex systems- a minimum of 3-way with more than likely a horn for the high end- where the system's design and tuning are far more important to the overall sound quality than the small details of the drivers. Beyond the small breakup at 550 Hz, which I don't think is significant, the 12PE32's don't screw anything up. I only switched away from these for simplicity. I used to run horn/12/15 (Dayton 12" waveguide) but went instead to horn/15 (15" OS waveguide). If I were going to do an "ultimate" system, I would probably do a 3-way with a 15" OS wg, this 12" for midrange, and something serious for midbass/bass (18, 21, 24, (4) 12s, or maybe (4) 15s). |
