I've recently picked up a LM3886 chip amp, which adds to a couple of vintage amps (including a Fisher 500C I need to fix up) along with a few projects I hope to finish at some point. Before I wire my Dynaudio's up to a new amplifier, I'd like to test it out for a while. That said, I'd still like the test speakers to be decent since I'll have to listen to them.
Anybody have a cheap pair of speakers they can let go of? Has to be small for shipping, so I wouldn't even mind a full-range small speaker, like the 3" Hi-Vi's that were so popular a few years back. I'm only looking to spend $50 shipped on a pair, otherwise I hop down to Fry's and find something stupid. Thanks! |

I have some small Advents I'd let go for $45,and some rubbishy HTIB speakers you can have for free. (I use one of the latter as a test speaker myself.)

Thanks, I'll let you know, pending any other offers. I'll let this sit for a few days and then see what my options are.
Like I said, thanks either way! |

Apexjr.com. He has cheap 6" Cerwin Vega drivers at $5 each and qts of .88 - slap onto a wide-ish piece of plywood and viola - a open baffle test speaker... may not be perfect, but will work like a charm for testing purposes.
Purchased a few of those for my test speakers... apexjr

Hmmm, it's a possibility, but I'd have to round up some tools for that and for that amount of time, I'd rather just go down the street and buy something cheap. Best Buy and Fry's always have an open box speaker they're willing to sell. It looks like that's what I'll be doing this weekend.

Good point, I haven't even been to a thrift store or salvation army here yet. I have some shirts I need to donate anyway. Might find me some odd vinyl while I'm at it

and garage sales... it is pretty easy to find a pair of $2-5 speakers around here... and quite a show when smoke starts pouring out from the voice coil.
