New pair of Merrell DCA 5.5 drivers. $80 plus shipping...

Had them for a bit over a week and listened to them "free air" for a couple of hours. Never mounted or soldered to.

They sound fantastic but just not to my taste.

They are matched pairs and I was told they tested 91db sensitivity. I wasn't given any other specs. I guess you could call Two Bald Guys Audio where I bought them to get specifics.

91 dB is optimistic.... Measured data...

As I suspected.

10 minutes after unpacking them, I was on the phone calling the vendor about the lack of sensitivity and that I wanted to send them back. Two Bald Guys are great and said no problem.

Now, they custom match drivers so it could be that my pair was tested at 91db.

I did notice how much bass they had in free-air and also suspected that they might work better in an open baffle instead of any box or the suggested P.A.W.O. horn.

They sounded very nice but I've worked with enough drivers to tell that I would be in a design/experiment loop with these.

If I had the time I would definitely have kept them.

I might buy another pair when someone figures out a nice cabinet for them.

Do you have the specs on the DCA4s. I just bought a pair for the zigmahornet design.

I have data for a 4:1 taper TL, and will play with a Fonken/miniOnken style box.

For some reason not a complete set -- if someone could get me an Sd (or better a mesure from cone edge to the basket side of the far surround, i can generate data) Here is a quick minimal example

I should have just went to you first for drivers and a cabinet design.

I wouldn't go that far - I had occasion to hear the Zigmahornets at Bald Guy's room at the recent VSAC show (in fact the exact same pair pictured in Jeff Day's review). Aside from the not unexpected lack of gonad shaking bass, these are quite nice indeed.

OTOH, they did have a pair of PAWOs running (not for long!) that sounded memorably bad - no bottom end to speak of, and quite colored in the midrange. I can't remember which driver they were running, whether a Merrill or new "Jordan". I'm very familiar with what this enclosure can do with a single 4.5" FR, ( i.e. Fostex FE127E), and this pair was a strike-out.

It sounds like Dave has already been percolating some ideas for the Merrill drivers - once they're on paper, I'll likely blast a pair together fairly quickly.
