Reccomendations for smallish, cheap sub for FR drivers.

Well, I'm sick, I have a six-page paper to write, and it's due tomorrow.

Hence, I'm procrastinating. (Smart, eh?)

Anyway, I'm currently working on (amongst other things) some PAWO horns driven by some funky custom-made drivers. They're supposed to be great, and although they can go down to 45hz, they sound better when crossed over to a woofer at about 70hz.

As nice as having one sub per speaker is, I don't think that for this application it's really necessary. (Also, I can't afford it.)

I live near Madisound, and their new Silver Flute line looks pretty spiffy.

The 8" W20RC38S has good performance down to about 30hz, and is only about 40$. It's also reasonably efficient,

Anyone else have any suggestions?

This thread mentions quite a few 8" woofers: http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=22322

Be sure to also check out the links posted there, the MCM driver has often been used in horn setups...

Anyone looked at those Silver Flute drivers? 88db efficiency down to about 30hz is nothing to complain about, and they're certianly cheap enough. The 5 1/4" drivers are supposed to be a good value for the money, too.

Well I'll go ahead and say what I was gonna say. The Tang Band W8-740C is less efficient and costs a little more, but it will go as low as just about any 8" out there.

I'm a little fuzzy on subs, but it looks like the 8" Silver Flutes are pretty flat down to about 30hz. That's low enough for me!

Well try them then. I'm kinda curious to know how that wool cone sounds. I really prefer paper to plastic, but I bet that wool sounds nice in those woofers.

Spasticteapot,

I believe the Silver Flute FR plots are for a vented box not IB.

Good to hear.

I found an old project (the "green meanie") using this driver. Powered by a 50w subwoofer amp, it's supposed to sound quite good, though it's not exactly super-powerful.
