Default My 1st Subwoofer project

Hello,

I put together my first subwoofer project to go with a sealed full-range speaker project of mine.

The subwoofer is the MAW-10 from mach5audio in a 30L bass reflex enclosure with a 70W partsexpress plate amplifier.

I have some construction pictures and the box design up on my webpage, MAW-10 ported Subwoofer Project.

The subwoofer performs very well and it produces nice tight bass. The MAW-10 driver easily soaks up all the power that the small plate amplifier can deliver. This subwoofer easily outperforms my 10" JBL PB-10 subwoofer and it integrates very well with my Fostex FE127E Sealed Bipole Project. Over all, this sub performs very well and it made for a simple and inexpensive project.

Cheers,
Gio.

I have to say, however, that you should go as quickly as you can, and buy the 240W plate amp. The 70W plate amp really can't come close to providing the oomph that you need, and it's the dynamic headroom of the amplifier that really seems to give the "sock you in the gut" sound everybody lusts after.

Agreed, it is a small plate amp.

However, I use this subwoofer with a Fostex FE127E Sealed Bipole. With the 70W plate amp, I only have to set it to half volume in order to keep up and get proper bass.

I did add a terminal cup at the bottom so I can power the sub with an external amp in the unlikely event I need to rattle the wall ornaments.

Hi,

I cross over at about 80Hz. It works very well and I cannot locate the sub.

The roll off of a sealed enclosure is 2nd order and so is the built in crossover in the plate amp. Ideally, you want a 24db crossover.

The plan is to go to an active 24db cross over with a bridged gainclone to drive the sub.

Cheers.

cool, thanks.

Ive got some fe127e's in the MLTL reference and am looking at integrating a sub. Ive been looking at 15's though, does your 10 put out enough for a decent sized HT?

The 10" MAW-10 easily outperforms a JBL PB-10 (also 10")

95% of the time I use it with 2 channel audio. For the 5% of the time I use it as a HT, it does the trick for me, but I am not the avid movie type.

If I was big into movies and HT, I would be looking at a minimum 12" sub and likely a 15".

Aside, which MLTL design are you using? Is it a bipole?

Cheers,
Gio.

Not a bipole, although eventually I plan to move my current mains to rears and build a couple of bipoles.

My current ones are the folded monopole DIY reference design.

Pretty happy with them, although they are a bit forward/piercing. Thinking about doing phase plug modification, have you looked into that at all?

Thanks for the advice though, I think I'll continue looking at 15's.

If you haven't already, do the cone treatment first, recommended by Dave (Planet_10hifi). This is a must for the FE127, to tame the midrange peak (7kHz) and overall brightness.
Do the phase plug-ectomy later if you are still not happy.

Jeff
