Hi,
I would be very grateful if you could suggest some drivers for a project I am considering.
I am looking for the best possible driver to use in an Isobarik bass system consisting of 12 drivers in each speaker (6 visible).
I have considered making the system servo controlled but I fear that such a project is simply to complicated.
Thank you very much.
Best regards,
JoeN

Re: ( inch driver for Isobarik system with 12 driver
Hmmmm....
"best possible" is somewhat nebulious.
also - what size cabinet volume?
sealed or a reflex design?
what sort of freq. response (passband) are you looking for? (is this a "sub"?)
what size driver?

Thank you for your answer.
It is a sub working from around 200hz and down.
I would prefer a closed cabinet but I am not religous at the matter.
As I mentioned in the original post I am looking for 8 inch drivers.
The cabinet will be from 70-100 liters (for all internal drivers to share) in total.

This should be in the subwoofer forum.. however,
for that small a volume (even with vas halved via isobarik loading), you'll likely want something with a low vas and high excursion (..considering effectivly 6 drivers per cabinet).
From least to most expensive:

It is, now!
I prob. should have added in the Tangband as well.. so here it is:

(note that another on the forum here has said that the MCM version is not as well made as the Tangband, and also has a similar fs to the Tangband - but obviously there is a substantial price % difference.)
There are prob. other low vas high excursion 8 inch drivers out there.. but I'm at somewhat of a loss for suggesting others.

Try it out
..good catch - hadn't seen that before.

Scott, You might have a point about the build quality of the MCM. I wonder if the Xmax rating is two way?
I have the TB 740C's and find them to be a good little workhorse. It's the only one of the group I've heard, but have no hesitation in recommending it.
What does the Peerless cost?

I wondered about that myself..

Datasheet for MCM says VC hight 24mm and gap hight 8mm so we have approx 16mm P-P or two way Xmax.

..missed that question originally.. sorry:

The TB w8-740C and the MCM driver referenced here are the two that are used in Bill Fitzmaurices small tubas, and I'm fairly certain that it was determined that the MCM xmax val was two-way. Anecdotal feedback on the two drivers was that the TB has significantly higher percieved quality, although I'm not sure on sound.
With the TB units, there is no need to go isobarik. I just threw together a sample at 4 ft^3 with 6 drivers and you can get down to about 30hz. With 6 units, you have tons of excursion to play with, although if you're looking for true 20Hz extension it may be tough.
If you have a decent EQ available, it's not even obvious that vented would be the way to go. Six of the TB's sealed in 3 ft^3 with appropriate EQ will do 105dB @20Hz, and that's before you pair them up or account for room gain.

I've published a box design for the first one. I'm using two of them in my car right now. As you add additional units, the respone flattens out nicely. You could make 12 of them for about $500-$600.
