Well, I'm almost done with my sealed Eminence Magnum 15HOs. They're heavily, and semi-randomly, braced, using the mitred triangular bracing scheme I've been using (45" mitres on either side of a brace let it form a triangle with the cabinet walls, and the resulting brace is fairly effective with just glue joints). Some areas are 1.5" thick, the front baffle is a laminate of particle board and ply, the rest is all 3/4" ply. My tablesaw gave up the ghost during bracing so it's a little bit schizophrenic in there, but there's plenty of it



They'll be lined in the same semi-random way with black hole 5, pieces of it where it can be fitted. Far from the meticulous and regimented approach of shinobiwan (kudos on the percieve/sub) or some others in here, nonetheless it's very strong

F3 is about 100Hz incredibly high, but that's modeled- with room gain, it should dig fairly deep, given the slow rolloff of the .5 Qtc alignment.

The finish is sprayed (from a can (or 10) sadly, don't have spraying capacity other than aerosol. Base coats are just basic sandable primer, the black stuff is appliance epoxy, chosen for its mechanical properties. I was surprised to see the grain showing through- pleasantly surprised. They'll never be drop-dead gorgeous, I'm not much of a finisher, but I'm pleased with their look nonetheless.

I bet they'll sound great, and sound like they have a lower f3 than 100Hz.

Hey - nothing wrong with painted wood - the grain usually does show through and can look very nice. Easier than veneering.

After letting them (mostly) cure over a few days, I rubbed them with my hand- seems my laziness in finishing had some consequences , there were a number of 'peaks' where the paint/primer had bonded to dust on the cab. Soooo.... I got up at 5AM today and hit them with some sand paper, 150 grit then 220, the epoxy sanded out nice 'n smooth, and hit them with another coat, which looks to be much smoother this time around, but the grain still shows (which I'm pleased about). Hopefully I can still get them up and running by 7:00 saturday, a goal I set last saturday at 7:00 (I'll have these done in a week dangit! So, more pics as more progress goes.

The drivers have been mounted, the cabinets are lined and have some foam in there (plain open cell urethane and some black-hole-5). I fed them wave sounds at 110 dB to give them a little workout. They didn't flinch, though I didn't stay in room long enough to know for sure

They have the sort of dynamism I was looking for, the 'kick drum' sensation is there. Very good resolution and even better impression of deep bass than I expected. Once they opened up a little, I could turn off the sub and be perfectly happy. Of course, the sub is in use, just crossed over nice 'n low.

So, this bass junkie (articulation is my poison, not max SPL) is happy


The tops are Audax PR17OMO and Eminence APT80 on an open baffle (Magnetar's design). Crossover is first order at 500Hz.

The wheels certainly aren't as stable as spikes, but it does allow me to fiddle with placement and allows the wife to move them.

Just as the black color was a concession to the wife's sense of style (or lack thereof, I prefer wood finishes) the wheels were a concession to practicality.

Sometimes a carefully chosen aspect or two can allow you to retain the placated wife while also retaining the important design aspects (in this case: being fargin' huge in our modest living room).

And being high efficiency: you wouldn't have to give them too much power to zoom around town with it
