Hi!
I'd like to ask if I understand this correctly: Do you have to build your sub to play as loud as ALL the satellites in a HT setup together? For example if there was an explosion in the front and another in the rear the sub would have to play twice as loud since the two explosions add up, wouldn't it? What do you think? since the LFE channel is mono, and the bass coming out of it is mostly synthesized, it will play as loud as the person who mixed it wants it to, so pretty much its a matter of weather or not they decided to sum the explosions, its also up to them how loud the sum of the explosions are.

Hi!
Sorry, I wasn't clear that I thought about Sub-Sat systems. There the Sub plays the bass of the satellites too. I guess it's all about the hardware which does the bass redirection? Regards, Sladjan |

well hwo i think about it, when you sum stuff to mono, you dont get a 3db boost, so im guessing that the way it redirects bass, it keeps it at a constant level.
but i coudl be wrong! this is just my logic.

I've read a few times that if all speakers are set to small then yes, the sub does need to be able to go louder to cover the extra re-directed bass.
At reference level all speakers large, sub needs to do 115dB All speakers small, sub needs to hit 121dB. Rob. |

Greets!
Right, bass management re-directs it, though often there's little LFE content in the surround channels. FYI, technically it's 115 + 10*Log10(number of channels), so for five channels it's ~122 dB/listening position, six = ~122.8 dB, etc., though unless the room is quite large, its gain will reduce this somewhat. Still, ideally you plan for the worst case and when not needed, it lowers distortion. GM
