n00b problem! Different impedance subwoofer and amp?? will it work??

hi,

Im a n00b at this so please be patient with me. I have a lovely looking 10" VRX subwoofer rated at 600w and 4 ohms. I want to wire it into my current pc sound system which is a CREATIVE Megaworks 250d THX 2.1 set.

The subwoofer in the creative is 10" and rated at 150w and at 8 ohms.

So im wondering would it work if i took the creative 8ohm sub out and put in the 4ohm VRX sub in it?? Would it blow up due to the impedance difference.

depends on whether the amp can handle 4ohms or not, I doubt that it can so you'll have to search the web for specifics on that amp model.

w/o actually looking up the rms output of that amp im guessing that it is around 50w, maybe 100w this is not enough for this other woofer. If the amp is 4ohm stable and if you turn it up too loud the amp will clip and send large voltage spikes through the v.c. possibly frying it.
Now I've never done this but I have read it mentioned many times around here.

The other problem you will have is that the box was designed around the 10" that came with the system, you might be seriously disappointed with the sound of the other sub in that box.

Conclusion, dont do it. More risks and problems than rewards.

Spot on nunayafb you can kill a 600w rms sub with a 50w amp if it clips and that’s basically like connecting it to a battery it wont be loud in that box

1: the amp and box is designed for the original subwoofer.
2: the 600w sub needs a lot more power than that 50w or so.
3: if the amp can’t handle 4 ohms it may see it as a short and go in protection mode or burn up.
4: if it clips and burns the coils the impendent may drop causing the amp to burn as well but if the amp blows it can have dc on the outputs and burn the sub also.

if I were you I would try it only because I take risks.
just run a test signal or music very low for a wile (with the sub out of the box) so you can monitor the temperature, smells and noises, as time goes on if that’s alright start turning it up and keep monitoring the temp until you get a reasonable level also keep watch on smells and noises as in burning smell and pops/crackles
if so it should be alright

I hooked a 12” sub in a box to a creative inspire 2.1 2400 subwoofer the amp is 21watts rms designed for a 5” it work good but not very loud

yeh, thats the thing, for some reason it does work most of time. I hooked up previously a 600w 12" kenwood sub to a 15w 2.1 packard bell system and it worked fine. Improving my bass but still not as loud as the sub can go.
but they were both 4ohms.
