Took some pictures of my first subwoofer today. It's a Peerless XLS based design with one 12" woofer and two 625g PR's. The box is aprox. 50 liters and built out of 60mm thick MDF. Behemoth is a suitable name for it. Unfortunately I forgot the camera at work so pictures won't be up until tomorrow.

60mm MDF is rediculis! I'm only using 1.5" (38mm) walls on my enclosure

Could be seen as a waste of MDF, but then again i'm a big fan of superflousness when designing enclosures
The Almighty Subwoofer by Stig Eric Tangen wasn't even that thick with sand filled walls and 15" JBL driver

Actually some commercial high end speakers build cabinets that thick. Here is one:
http://www.equinoxaudio.com.au/produ...rs/jupiter.php Vaf signature speakers are up to 52mm thick http://www.vaf.com.au/detail.asp?aud...runt=I11i26719 I'd do some pretty serious bracing before going that thick though. I think 36mm is a good thickness. My mains are up to that thick with bracing and they are nice and dead, but my subs are 18mm thick (unbraced test boxes) and they vibrate like mad!

Bracing is far more important as you say.
The first link is the baffle only (and then because a curve is cut out for time alignmnt?), and I couldn't stomache reading anything past the first paragraph of the second link

Actually I'd say its a balance of bracing and enclosure thickness.
Those VAF speakers I have actually heard in their showroom/headquarters and they are very accurate speakers. I've heard diy speakers using seas excel drivers but the vaf versions are extremely accurate and this suggests to me that they got something right. Although I find they are accurate to the point of being unforgiving. No doubt the equinox aren't that thickness throughout, however thickness is one area where commercial speakers rarely contain overkill, as they have to be shipped.

I wish Icould take credit for building it, but I went to a local company that builds wooden furniture and asked the to build it for me. They did a fantastic job. The also lacquered (?) it for me. It turned out better than I could ever have imagined. I'll post post pictures of the finished sub as soon as it is assembled. Right now it looks as if the dampening material is out of stock until late january, so it may not be finished until some time in february.
