Hey whats up -

I just bought a Ascendant Audio Atlas 12" woofer. I listen to every kind of music and for the most part i like it loud. to narrow it down so i can get some advice....i listen to stuff like Sublime, incubus, led zepplin, hendrix, and metallica.

I was wondering if some one could suggest a type of box i should use. Actually - i was wondering if I could just use my Q-logic sealed box or If i'd be better off having a custom box made.

It depends on what you want out of it, as the different enclosures and alignments give you different bandwidths. Also depends how low your fronts go. For your music tastes, IMO I would lean to a mid or higher Q box. But having the extra coil will allow you to change all that on the fly.

Currently I've got my Atlas12 in the 88.5L sealed enclosure recommended in the Shiva sealed applications. Also installed another set of terminals to play with the extra coil. It sounds great for what it is. The shape hasn't worked for me so it'll probably change soon.. but thats another matter.

What size is the Qlogic enclosure?

Good choice, I've had mine about a month now a love it. Mine is in about 88 liters, ported to about 19Hz via a 4 inch port. I listen to it ported when watching movies or listening to heavy bass tracks. When I'm listening to other music (jazz, classical, classic rock) I prefer it sealed via a towel or Nerf football jammed into the port. Right now I'm using it on the LowQ setting, but for sealed, I think it would sound better with a 1.5ohm resistor on the RDO coil - it's just a bit too dry (Qts is only like .45 or so). I think the midQ setting will sound better sealed bringing the Qts up to about .64. I'll know for sure early next week when my new amp and resistor arrive.

And for those of us who no little to nothing about infinite baffle design, could you maybe describe a simple one?

An IB uses the attic or a basement as the enclosure so the bass attack is so fast and accurate that it sounds like no other sub. In addition, there is no energy loading the enclosure to dissipate and smear the dynamics. Mine was so different that I had to re-tune my entire system because the treble and mids sounded much louder and clearer without all that bass energy flopping around after the initial signal.

4 Avalanche 18" in a manifold will bring the house down and be the most musical sub you have ever heard, however they seem a bit harder to EQ for flat in-room response and they take more SD to get the same output as a good ported design, that’s why you do the overkill of 4 18's.

Since it's going into a car, a large enough sealed enclosure will be nice.

Yeah ^ that was my bad. Im pretty new to online forums - and the only other one I am a member of is at 7thgencivic.com and when someone asks for help with audio...its car audio. So that was my bad for not mentioning it before.

Right now I have the sub in a generic sealed Q Logic box w/measurements 10x10x15, is that too small?
