Usually, you can hear the VC hit the magnet plate (gives a very farty sound) if you get that, turn it down.
The definition of Xmax, btw, is the average of how far the cone moves from rest (so you'd go each way) when linearity is changed by 10%. Chris

My rule of thumb is that when the drivers are visibly in-motion during typical listening, it's too much excursion and you need more displacement. This method generally leaves about the right amount of headroom for real dynamic transients.
