Well after only a couple weeks of my two 12's sealed I am already wanting to upgrade. I am thinking of buying a 15" Dayton Audio Titanic sub and running it off my 1000W plate amp. Ported this time definatly. Before I buy I was wondering if there are any other subs out there with similair output, sound quality, and price of the Dayton Titanic MKIII 15?
Thanks |

Well, going by the specs, the Qts is low at .38 which should make it go low, which the specs do reflect. But it may not be as loud as something with a higher Qts, maybe around .7 or so. It depends on what you like. Though the rated sensitivity is by no means bad.
Edit to add: As for the 1000W amp, I would make sure to keep it not much higher than half, as the driver is rated 800 watts. |

Why not port the 12's? two ported 12's should be louder than one 15".
(I didn't look at the specs but this is assuming they can work in ported enclosures) |

what kind of bass do you want?
do you listen to music or HT? both? what 12s do you currently have, what box are they in? If youre the type that listens to rap at astounding levels, then port em to 30hz in a big box and get a big peak for all those booms 2 12s should have 60% more surface area than a 15"

The sub will be used about 70% music 30% movies. The 12's I am using are two Image Dynamics IDQ v.2 DVC 2 ohm (I used these subs because I had them here anyways). Each sub has its own enclosure @ 30 litres sealed. I also put in 1/2 lb of polyfill in each box. Didnt seem to make any difference with or without it. I listen to everything from rap, to hard house, to rock, to classic rock, to classical. So pretty much everything except country. But the subs lack the bass in rap songs when the bass drops too low and the subs go pretty much silent when there should be a low loud bass note. Using WinISD I have been trying different things using these subs (ported and sealed) and it seems with these subs start to roll off at to high of a frequency. Where that 15" Titanic ported has flat response down to below 30 hz, and even at 20hz only a couple dB less (IDQ's flat response to about only 50hz then drops) Also these are DVC 2 ohm so there is no way to wire them to 4 ohms to the amp, so they are only wired to 8 ohms getting about 250 watts each, where each sub is rated at 350 RMS. Thanks for the replies guys! Hopefully you can help me out. If you need anymore info on these subs just ask! I really appreciate the help here!
Thanks |

OK!
This might be difficult, youll end up making compomises most likely. For rap you want a mid sized box tuned to 25-32hz, for classical you want(and this is my opinion so no one can shoot me down) probably a sealed sub, keeping things simple even and accurate. And for HT you want a sub thats flat right to the low notes and can produce alot of volume at low frequencies. I'm to lazy to do any modelling, but a sealable SBB4 alignment sounds good to me

So the Titanic since its flat right down into the low frequencies, it would be good for HT applications correct? Would it also be good for rap then correct? And how would it be on say drum bass from say metallica? I'm not too worried about the classical part of it all, I would just put my receiver in pure direct mode for that if it sounded that bad. Since my towers have decent low end. And how would this sub sound on some hard house tight beats?
Still taking ideas on other possibilities too!! thanks |

How much space do you have? I would do a 5 cu.ft vented box tuned to 18.5 Hz per driver with a 2nd order butterworth highpass filter at 20 Hz. You could do one huge box or two separate big boxes.
About 122 dB from 20 Hz and up in a normal room from your amplifier using the same wiring scheme, so 250W RMS per driver, it's enough.
