DIY computer subwoofer & amp.

Hi, i have a spare 8" subwoofer laying around doing nothing so i decided to make use of it. I want to make a lil sound system for my computer but i dont have much to spend. Is there a way to connect together a system similar to a car's audio system? with like an amp and subs n speakers. If thats not possible, would you be able to help me out in making the subwoofer work from my comp with the lease expense?

Is your spare subwoofer amplified? If not, you need a plate amplifier. After that, it's quite easy to plug it with the computer with some adaptors.

my subs is just the speaker itself, not amplified. Whats a plate amplifier? and where would i be able to buy that from?

You can buy them from PartsExpress, Rythmik Audio, Acoustic-Visions also...

A plate amplifier is used to power a subwoofer in a box and it sits on the side of the box. It have usually a bunch of line-in and line-out connectors and crossovers to match with your system.

You might even be able to find a 2.1 plate amp that will give have 3 amps.

One for the sub and 2 for the stereo speakers.

Or just build them all...

Since you're an Aussie, I'd suggest you try Jaycar. Certainly not the best products but more than good enough for the average computer.
