Hertz ML-5400 D
Can i made this woofer good(going down and loud) for ht? I have never make diy woofers so can some one help and give some advice?I want loud good woofer. http://www.bigdogaudio.de/pd561831531.htm
I think it will be good for HT, the problem is to power it since it's a 1 ohm driver...!
Yep i notice that afterward, but can that wired so that resistance is 2.2 ohm? What woofer module amp can take 2ohm?
It seems to be a dual 2 ohms voice coil, so you can drive it with a normal 4 ohms subwoofer amplifier if you plug the coils in series.
Of course 2ohm per voice coil, sorry. What shoul box be, vented or closed? Adn how much i can get max. spl@ 20Hz from that element and total max spl?
I think vented would match room gain better.
It needs a huge enclosure.
With 400 liters tuned to 19 Hz it looks right, 112,5 dB at 20 Hz without room gain. Maximum SPL is 120 dB without room gain at 100 Hz. You need 290W RMS.
You can put this enclosure smaller, you get a bit more maximum SPL but lose SPL at 20 Hz.
You could get even more SPL at 20 Hz if you build a larger enclosure and abuse with tuning frequency.
Unless you already have such a unit, I would not recommend the use of car woofers (even most high end ones) for home use, for the following reasons:
They are usually more expensive due to cosmetics
They are usually less efficient, although the one you linked to is an exception
Fs is often too high (designed for car cabin gain which kicks in much earlier than room gain)
Those that I have tested had much higher 3rd harmonic distortion than home units. I think this is sometimes done deliberately to give a punchier sound with peaky tuning in high SPL situations.
Upper bass response is often poor compared to home sub drivers.
Well its quite hard to beat diy woofer this: SVS PB12-Ultra/2 measurements with RadioShack spl meter(analog).
Subwoofer is placed in corner and measure was 3meters distance.
SVS has PEQ, i use it to get straight response as i can.
I use 25Hz tune to get maxim pressures and subsonic filter is 25Hz.
Hz dB Max dB
200 60 97
150 69 113
100 79 114
50 76 107
45 85 117
40 86 119
35 86 116
30 88 113
25 87 110
20 79 102
First, did you correct these measurements?
Second, a simple Adire Audio Tempest can beat these results if you build the box correctly. Also, it will go way lower. But then, you'll need a much more bigger box, that's a small compromise for me, but maybe not for you.
No i didn't so its goes little louder 121.5dB at 40Hz when corrected. Adire Audio Tempest is that good and what about Maelstrom? How much these can put spl? Any good links Tempest or maelstrom projekts?
