Paul,

even dipoles will have the pressure maximum in the corners. However maybe you´r thinking on the way the speaker couples to the peaks/dips out in the room?

You will find the peaks and dips (as a result of room standing waves) at the same relative places in the room with dipoles and boxes. However, since they ecxite these differently, you will have different results even if the box and dipole are placed on the same spot in the room when measuring.

A box woofer will excite the room modes max when placed in a corner. After a corner the box will excite the modes most when placed where you find the actual peak out in the room.

A dipole on the other hand will not manage to do much at all when placed in a corner and will contribute most to standing waves when positioned at a null out in the room.

The reasons for this is that in a corner the velocity is as good as nill but pressure is max (pressure source/box). Also out in the room where you find a peak the pressure will be relatively high but velocity low. Also the out of phase back wave will be reflected by walls and detract from total output.

I believe a dipole being a velocity source, will push the air efficiently when placed in a room mode dip out in the room and thereby contributing to the room mode buildup. This is simply because the air velocity is high where the pressure is very low.

I´d say in the end you always need more basstraps with a box woofer.
