Default Subwoofer for Vifa TC-line speakers

I'm planning to build a subwoofer unit, perhaps using some 8" or 10" woofer. I planned to use one of these Peerless drivers:
  • Peerless SLS 213 / 830667, 8"
  • Peerless SLS 263 / 830668, 10"
  • Peerless Classic 831727, 10"

...or some other woofer, please make suggestions! Would be nice if it's 8 ohm unit, and doesn't cost a fortune.
The 10" Peerless XLS would be great, but doesn't fit in my budget.

For (reflex) enclosure, I planned something like 55...65L for the 8" and 75...85L for the 10". Tuning freqencies around 22-25 Hz. Are these okay?

It's going to have 140 watts of "STK chip-amp" input power, and a -24dB/oct Linkwitz-Riley cross-over.

This subwoofer is going to be paired with small main-speakers with Vifa TC14WG49-08. Their bass-range extends to slightly below 50 Hz...

Not knowing what these units cost where you live my advice would be as follows:

A. Peerless makes some very good drivers.
B. The amount of bass extension you will get is determined by both the woofer and the room, the smaller the room, the more room gain you will to boost the low frequency response.
C. Generally, the bigger the woofer teh deeper it's bass response.
D. If you really want to get the most bang for your buck, find a dealer for Adire Audio's Shiva 12" DVC subwoofer. You can check out the specs and get some very good info on construction of a box that would fit very nicely into your sixe requirements.

In an 85 liter cabinet you can tune the port to 20 HZ and get in room response to 22 Hz. Nothing from Peerless that I know of will accomplish this.

If the Shiva is more than you are willing to spend now, save up. It will be well worth the wait. If you decide to upgrade later on, all you need to do is build a bigger box and you can get down to 16.3 Hz in a 142 liter cabinet with this same driver.

One way you could cut some cost is to find a distributor of Sonotube. This is cardboard used to make cement columns and is excellent for subs. It is light, inexpensive and won't flex or need bracing the way a regular cabinet will.

Check out www.adireaudio.com for lots of info and links.

I have one of these woofers myself and it was easily the best invenstment I could have made for getting good deep, undistorted bass.

What ever you choose, good luck.

The problem is, that there's no Adire dealer in my country.
And I'm not very interested in ordering the Shiva from other country...

I certainly agree. Shiva goes low&loud.

But for regular, rock/pop/metal music listening, does it really matter that much?I mean, the 10" Peerless 831727 goes to about 28 Hz in 85L box. When it is crossed at 50 Hz, for example, the relative response is -3dB down at ~21 Hz. I think that's enough for normal music...?

I see they have dealers listed in Sweden, Norway and Switzerlan, but nothing for Finland.

As to the Peerless driver I don't doubt it will go down that far the question is how loud will it play at that frequency, which a question most manufacturers don't answer. With room gain you will probably do fine especially in a normal size room.

My recomendation is based on my very favorable impressions of my own Shiva and the above average quality of the specifications and the honesty of them, via the DUMAX system. You might wish to check into the availability of Sonotube, which is casrdboard tubes used to form concrete pillars. It greatly simplifies construction and needs no bracing since even though it's thin it doesn't flex the way MDF or wood does. It 's also not very expensive.

Whatever you choose, I hope it comes out well, since nothing adds to good hi-fi like good deep bass.

Good Luck
