How About These for Dipole Sub?

I saw the Dayton 12" IB at PE. The specs are fs 26.4 Ots .61 Xmax 15.1mm. Those look good for a dipole sub to my untrained eye. If not, got any suggestions in the same price range ($85) ?

Those look good to me. I was actually thinking about those at one point, but didn't have the cash at the time to afford them.

They test on paper pretty well. Although the Pyle Pro PPA 12" or 15" are tested well and much cheaper.

Chops, I remember reading about your adventure with an OB sub. You seemed pretty happy with the Pyle 15"ers, as I recall. But didn't you use 4? That, along with another amp, would put me over budget . How do you think just a pair would do?

I was thinking 12s to keep the size and cost lower (and SAF higher) but the Pyle 12s have a higher fs than I was hoping for.

My room is fairly large volume - abt 14x20 with a ceiling sloping from 10' to 20'.

Being retired is great for having time to build, but the limited income makes it difficult to buy anything to build with!

you'll notice with testing that the baffle has much to do with the Frequency response. SPL of course has more to do with the size of the driver. Although I can't imagine that 2x12" woofers can't fill your room properly powered. At the same time though, through all my plug and chug experiments I found that I couldn't really justify using a smaller baffle than the one that CHOPS used, therefore you might just as well go with the 15".

You wouldn't need a really big baffle for these. And they are sooooo cheep.

IMO, that driver would not be suitable. Its displacement is pretty damn small.

the driver is 31.5" in diameter.

A 15" driver with an xmax of 6mm displaces ~167 cubic inches of air in its full stroke

A 31.5" driver with an xmax of 2.3mm displaces ~280 cubic inches of air in its full stroke.

It's a 32" woofer, it doesn't need much xMax to move a lot of air.

This driver has such a large Vas, that either an open baffle or the next room as box are all that is practical.

Its displacement is about 1.15L, which limits you to a maximum of roughly 86dB at 25Hz at 1 meter (taken from Linkwitz's OB spreadsheet).

If it is, the FW800 would have a minimum of 800 mm being an 800mm driver... larger would be more likely.

My dear apologies! That's not the maximum SPL, that's the sensitivity!

86db@1W@25Hz isn't too bad... But you can't get much louder than that at listening position, I would think.

Ignoring any baffle/room gain, it calcs to ~91.63dB/m/18Hz, 103.68dB/m/36Hz, 115.72dB/m/72Hz at Xmax, so not too shabby once the room is factored in. Still, you can buy a lot more Xmax and the power amps to drive them for $2446.
