Ordered Tumult

Hi,

I decided to build a new sub. I got tired to my Fane subs
that produce too much distortion.

The order haven't been confirmed yet and I don't know
so far when we are going to receive the driver, but
the decision is made and it is that Tumult is coming here
from Sweden one way or another.

I have been thinking between bass reflex and closed
box design but haven't decided yet. I am not sure if
I will get enough SPL at 20 Hz in closed box
(as a reference 2 x Fane Colossus 18 XB tuned at 21 Hz in 250 liter enclosures each both with 1.2 kW of amplification is not enough). And on the other hand, I am not sure if one Tumult
will be enough or will I need to order more of these.
The amps will remain so far, so I am going to drive the Tumult with 1.2 kW power from a PA-amplifier.

Any comments?

I wish you luck with your endevour with your Tumult, I tried *many* setups on mine and just could not get it to sound right. From sealed to vented boxes and sonotubes. I tried to integrate it with my home stereo, my PA system as well as my car stereo. I tried a few different amps with it too. On my PA system side, a Crown Macro-Tech 5000vz, an AB International Precedent 600LX. On the car stereo side, a Soundstream Rubicon 1002 amp, and on the home stereo side an Adcom GFA2535 and GFA5500.

I found even when I used the Crown Macro-Tech the woofer bottomed out far before it reached the advertised 36mm one way excursion limit. The woofer is very inefficient, but I see you are going to use a PA amplifier to drive it. Good luck.

Try 130 liters, tuned to 16 Hz. Use a port with 150 cm^2 of area, and make it 120 cm long. Should give you great extension down to the low teens, work well with your amp, and considering you're moving to 5L of linear displacement (from 3.2L for the twin 18XBs), you should gain ~2 dB more peak output, too...

Uh yah, that will work.......
if you don't mind having the port stick out way of the box. :xeye:
By the way, where you can find ports that wide? I only thought you can get the larger ones in 4" 6" & 8".
1 in = 2.54 cm right?

Looks like slots or PR's Karoliina if you want to go that route.

You kind of answered your own question... A slot port, of course, and since Karoliina is in Finland (where they use Metric), I figured quoting in metric would work fine. A vent, say, 10cm x 5 cm would work fine, and fold it around a few times in the cabinet to get a final length of 120cm...

I was going to use a Tumult in a ported configuration but was talked out of it. PR seems good, Via the Acustic vision stuff. I kind of got the Idea the Tumult is best suited for a sealed box. Throw a Linkwitz circut in there to get extension. This will use all of your Amps headroom depending on how loud you crank it. I am building two Tempest EBS units myself. Lots and lots of woodworking building these damm things I tell you. Makes me wish I tried Tumult/ported instead. Either way the Tumult is one sexy bad *** unit. Enjoy it.

Hello Karoliina.

I don't know if you are aware, but Fane woofers are not
designed to be tuned at 21 Hz.

I know alot of you home audio buffs tune PA Woofers
below its fs, but, its not using the woofer the correct way.

Your distortion is a perfect example of trying to get
something the woofer cannot produce.

The only PA woofer that I can think of that would be
no problem, having fb 21 Hz tunning is the McCauley
6174 (Fs = 15 Hz)

As for the Tumult, it should give you a cleaner sound
in those lower cycles than the Fane 18 XB. (30 - 20Hz)

The efficency, will be lower, however, that's
customary, when you aim to have a speaker playing
notes under 35 Hertz.

I tend to build cabs that can give me the desired
fb flat, then gradually rolloff. So, my cabinets are
always large enough to accommodate the desired
frequency.

I recomend you do the same thing with the Tumult
you ordered.

If you can house two 18 inch subs in your home,
space is not a problem. Thus go for the desired
frequency, having a flat signal, not relying on
an equalizer to increase the fallin db's due to
cabinet compromise.

It is much easier to reduce the 20, 25, 31.5, &
40 Hz on your 1/3 octave than, using room
gain to make it up.

And, for a speaker like the Tumult, I would
recomend a reflex cab.

Best Regards,

OMNIFEX :

Yes, I know, I have Fane 18XB against the recommendations
of the manufacturer.

Because they are not good for my use (very compromised
sound quality between 16 and 40 Hz), I decided to go
for a driver that better suits my needs and wishes.
Tumult appears to be one. The biggest Aurasound would
have also been possible choice, but it would have been
more expensive.

I don't use room gain to equalize anything. In fact, my sub
is currently placed in the standing wave minimum (only
place that was free in the home theater) and I need
excessive equalization to get any low bass to the listening
position (in the case of Fane).
Equalization is no problem (up or down), I can do active filters
and we are designing also a digital crossover which is
however not yet in production. Surprisingly the usual
high amount of bass is not the problem in our home theater,
it is rather the low amount of bass. Also because of the
heavy acoustic treatment, the main speakers must be driven
with excessive amount of power to get theater volumes to
the listening position, the soft materials in all walls and ceiling
appears to absorb sound pretty well.

Tumult arrived

Hi,

The Tumult arrived last week. The magnet is HUGE
I must say. Okay, now it is the time to do the box.

130 l tuned at 16 Hz was suggested.

Are there any other advantages than the
lower group delay to the 16 Hz tuning?
18 Hz tuning could give a little more output.
Anyway, the 16 Hz tuning also looks ok.
I could place the subwoofer under the stairs
if I could make the subwoofer to fit in a place
that is 75 cm wide, 100 cm long and 70 cm tall.

Should I drive the amplifier in stereo mode by
driving each voice coil with each channel or should
I drive the amplifier in parallel mode by driving
the voice coils in series? I assume that the
bridge mode is not the right choice for this
subwoofer anyway. The amplifier has 2 x 700 W
output to 4 ohm and has three modes:
stereo, parallel and bridge.

Best Wishes,
Karoliina

I wonder if a Tumult would work in an IB, if so that would be the way to go. If not then let the port stick out I had to do this with a pair Maelstrom subs and I added a Port valve that could be opened and closed, works very well, better then I had hoped, I keep it closed for Music, and it allows for some interesting experimentation.

Here are my sets of Tumults. I ended up with about 6.5ft3 each @16.5 Hz. I run around a KW per driver, sometimes I run a pair of proaudio amps at 2KW per sub without any problems. They sound great, integrate well, and look great. I simply don't understand how anyone couldn't like these subs, unless they don't know what they are doing........
