Hi

A friend and i are making a couple of horn subs on the cheap.
We have access to loads of free 12mm construction plywood(5 layer) with a rough surface.
We were thinking about gluing a 6mm MDF panel on, making it a total of 18mm and use the smooth surface for the inside of the horn.

We were just wondering if you guys and gals think that this would be stiff enough for a horn sub.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Stiffness increases at the cube of thickness and since the cheap plywood is probably much stiffer than the MDF, I vote for doubling up the plywood and if you want its roughness smoothed out somewhat, mix acrylic latex caulk to acrylic latex paint like painters do to smooth out old barn wood, etc..

Double the plywood and use a random orbit sander to smooth outside of the box only. It'll be easier to get a smooth finish for painting. Leave the inside rough and paint. Bass is not significantly affected by the rough finish. Or sand the inside too.
