Hi,

Hello from France and Happy New Year to all of you !

Owner since 35 years of a amazing pair of AR11, I always have been " enchanted "by the sound.
A few years ago, a woofer was accidently destroyed and a "specialist" replaced them by a pair of unknown woofers. Since, the sound is flat.

Retired now, I have time to repair the damages and I'm looking for a pair of original woofers. Unfortunetly, these are not to be found, apparently.

The only track I have is this link :

Acoustic Research AR 9 AR 10PI AR 11 12" Woofer Factory AR Speaker Part New | eBay

I ask for your opinion ...with these, would I find the original sound ?

Friendly,

Bernard.

P.S : sorry for my terrible English. Schooldays are so far..!

If only one woofer has been destroyed, do you still have the other one? Then you could measure it (especially the transfer function and impedance, thiele / small parameters are less important here) so you know what your target is. Compare it to the replacement woofers. It might be possible to correct the differences between the two woofers by modifying the crossover.

I had a set of ar11 speakers... found them at a good will store... its a place where people donate things to be resold... I just replaced the foam on the woofers and shined up the cabinets ...they were some really great sounding speakers...I sold them to pay some bills...I did not want to let them go !!..

I just looked on ebay they have some for sale there but they are about 100 american dollars each....+ any shipping.....I will look....and post on here..I think there is a place where you can buy new ones as 100% replacement...

BRAND NEW REPLACEMNTS.. NOT CHEAP BUT AVAILABLE IN STOCK............. HERE YA GO...........

What's your mind about the link ?
I never used ebay so I do not know. The claims 'original' and 'New materials last much longer than the original design!' are contradictory and make me suspicious whether this is a real original woofer.

Bear in mind that original woofers would be decades old, so they probably would need refoaming. That would cost about €30 extra if you do it yourself and adds a risk of destroying the woofers.

This guy sells two used woofers, but one is slightly damaged and it is still expensive:

they should sound like the factory speakers when they were new...
sometimes they use updated materials but I think that is a good thing...

I cant swear about your speakers... but I bought a set of altec 19 Drivers and crossovers..from Great Plains audio...(they make replacement parts for the old altec speakers) they were last sold in 1979?? A friend has a set that were made in 1977 his dad had bought new.. to me... mine sound 100% the same...

I would take the chance and buy the new speakers,, old speakers do wear out and it's
not just the foam..

Thanks guys,

dandee, I'm interested by your experience , and I also agree with TBTL ...

If we could get the opinion of someone who would buy from this seller...!
I still have to contact the firm to determine if the characteristics are identical .
May also contact AR directly to see if they approve the seller? Seems unrealistic , isn't it ?

Bernard,

For Acoustic Research speakers and other old classic speakers, you really should register at the forum of The Classic Speaker Pages and read the messages there, then ask the experts about your situation.

Best regards,
Edward Tam

I'm also interested in the vintage restorations.
The speakers drivers should work fine, without having to change "to little or to much" in the crossover. When buying a pair (one for each speaker) you are playing in the safe side.
For audiophiles, you can only get a perfect mach-up after a repair or in a vintage item, if you get factory warranties or take them yourself to the Lab. What is not the case here. A similar driver (Simply Speakers) is in itself enough in this case. In some cases a matching pair also helps with small electrical variations.

OP,
The identity of a speaker driver is given by the original measured T/S parameters many times called "the specs" and the "curves" of measured frequency output, impedance, phase, inductance () in the frequency domain.
Comparing this info between the two drivers, original and new should be the reinsurance you ask.
