I need some that are designed to work good in closed boxes and have no larger than 6" cone surface area. Ideally something between 4 to 6 inches that wont keel over while being fed up 75-100 watts of class D @ 8 ohms. ohms would be ok too.

I'd probably go for one or two of the Tang Band 6.5" minisubs. They need a (sometimes literal) rocket up them to produce decent volumes, but output is surprising for the size.

To give you an idea, mine are in ~11L ported boxes tuned to 38Hz. With a Behringer NU6000, I was somewhere between -12dB and -6dB, which comes to 2-500w/ch peaks. You might find your amplifier a touch underpowered.

Chris

The baffle area restricts me from using anything larger than 6", no option to trim them at all.

The amp will make 175 split in half.
Perhaps you could mount a larger speaker sideways in a plenum, or side firing.

What are the overall cabinet dimensions?

Unconventional cabs, 6" diam. tubular .75" wall thickness. Length: to be determined? What do you think about these drivers http://solen.dixfractions.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/w32108.pdf

Although for aesthetics I would prefer something more like these having circular flanges http://solen.ca/products/speakers/home-speakers/subwoofers/w6-1139sif/

I was considering some ported but I want to get them down as small as possible.

I think they look cute. As far as output, multiply the cone area x the Xmax to determine displacement, the driver(s) with the best displacement to $$ ratio and the lowest FS with the smallest Vas should fill the bill.

Depending on depth, you might fit a pair of 4.5" or 5" face to face <II> in the tube, which would give 6 dB more output than a single.

Thanks for your helping weltersys. I like the idea of doubling up but I think I will stick with one driver per for now. I can always add later if that isn't adequate. I have lots of tubes at my disposal. Im only trying to fill in some lower octaves while using little proac tablets. I have subs but I wanted to try this route just because I can.

Some people scoff at sas bazooka tubes but I quite liked them in one application I put together. A pair of 6" bazooka's squeezed in behind the seat of my toyota mini 4x4. They filled the tiny cab with plenty of lows and I was happy with my system. Being 6 feet tall and needing the seat in the full back position boxy cabinets weren't happening. This time theres not really a big space restriction. I want to see how low/small I can go here. Again just because I can 🙂. Im obviously not looking for gut punching bass. If things sound rich and fuller Ill of reached my goal.

A tiny cab can easily have 10 dB or more cabin gain compared to a small room, so will sound more than twice as loud in the truck than it will in the room.

Hi there S: Google-up Parts Express and go to speaker components, hi-fi, subwoofer, enter your sizes like 5.25, 5.5, 6", they will show several of each size with nearly complete parameters and box recommendations. Also they will provide tec support to assist you for products you purchase from them. ...regards, Michael

True, I did think about cabin gain. I used the subs inside the house for a time and remember them pumping along pretty decent. Im older now and while I still love my bass a little less tends to go a little bit further. Nice crisp bass sound is all Im after for this setup.

Im thinking the TB would look pretty sweet 5th. Im recycling some parts from something else there almost plug and play as is. They will sit upright on the plates after I order some threaded spikes.

Heres what Im talking about

Personally I'd go with the ~5" TB sub. Really you want to use the driver with the largest swept volume, you can affort and you can fit into the cabinet.

W5-1138SMF - 5" Paper Subwooofer - TB SPEAKER CO., LTD.

W5-1138SM - 5" Paper Subwoofer - TB SPEAKER CO., LTD.

I'd expect similar performance from these as the 6.5" ones I mentioned ealier. Chances are they'll also need a pretty hefty amplifier behind them to get any real output.

SS, the midbass that tubesguy has linked is a pretty impressive driver, with a very good motor giving plenty of Xmax. It was designed for small 2-way boxes with good output and LF response, so there's a couple of subwoofer designs out there for it.

Where is the best place for me to order those 5's? Parts express doesnt seem to have them, just these 5.25 Tang Band W5-1138SM 5-1/4" Neodymium Subwoofer

I want to order two W5-1138SMF

Hi tb46. Ok aside from the sizes they look to be the same speaker, same specs. I was just wondering why they are 5" on TB site and 5.25" at parts express. Im pretty sure those are the drivers Ill go with. Thanks everyone. I will try to get some updates on my creation up if you care to check them out.

There are some cool designs out there utilizing these TBs.

I did have a question about my sealed plan though. They get an f3 of 73hz in a sealed 1ft cab. I plan to use an EQ to push it down. Is there a likely chance I will damage those drivers? I suppose I could do vented, but would rather not.
