Velodyne. Quality Or Marketing Fluff?

A large part of it is the motion feedback technology that actively tracks (with digital circuitry nowadays) the cone's motion with a device called an accelerometer. Then, it notices deviations from the original signal, and feeds that signal back into the amplifier which sums the outputs and uses it to adjust the amount of force applied to the cone to keep it tracking the input signal nearly perfectly. the result is extremely low group delay. That is why Velodyne's bigger subs have such large amplifiers and driver motors - they need to have a huge mechanical advantage to keep that cone in line. In addition, many of their lesser products feature active excursion limiting, to lower the levels of deep bass in order to keep the cone from over-excursioning. A couple of their products feature Current-Sensing servo technology which, instead of using an accelerometer for feedback, monitors the fluctuations in current through the driver's voice coil as it moves through the magnetic gap and adjusts the current that is being applied.

One way you could possibly realize this type of performance is find a long-excursion, high-power-handling driver (like either the Adire Audio "Shiva" or better) and put it in a sealed box such that the Qtc of the closed box is between 0.6 and 0.5. Then, use a Linkwitz Transform circuit or other form of bass boost to equalize the bass back up to normal levels. You need a powerful amplifier ot pull this off, and the Linkwitz Transform circuit requires some electronics expertise to realize.
