There are two functions to consider, providing a seal between the driver frame and cabinet opening and damping vibrations at that interface. The first is only important for a sealed application but the second applies to all. If the driver frame and cabinet opening are perfectly flat at the mating faces either will provide an adequate seal. The benefit of cork comes into play when the mating surfaces are less than perfect. Here the thickness of the cork and its compressibility allows it to fill gaps at the mating surface as the fasteners are tightened and the cork compresses. But for cork this is a one time opportunity as it will be permanently compressed and take a set pretty quickly.
