Default flush mounting subwoofers?

Any concensus on flush mounting a subwoofer?

I flush mounted mine strictly for the esthetics. It will have no effect on the sound either way. Except for a big woofer in a very small box. The more the woofer is recessed, the smaller the box which could make a difference in an already small box.
